DETAILS OF UPCOMING BUILDING PROJECT

Based on the positive response we received to our question about building a model from start to finish, documenting it and forwarding it each month with the Newsletter, we have decided to go forward with our building project.  The Complete Kit of the “Westbourne” has been selected as the basis for this project.  This kit was selected because it is a good match for many of the criteria we had established.  Additionally, it is ideal for experienced as well as novice builders.  By following along, it will detail every step from opening the box of a model right through its maiden voyage.

Since it is a Tugboat, we know that it will be stable and responsive in most any weather conditions.  Weight will also not be an issue which will allow for a wide range of equipment choices and future upgrades.  The size is also important in that it is large enough that the parts are easily seen and handled yet small enough so that it is not too heavy to carry or too large to transport.  This is also a very good kit for a very reasonable price.  Provided with this kit is a fiberglass Hull, so that the demands of planking a Hull are eliminated.  But it does have a wooden cabin, so there will be an opportunity to explore many techniques involved in working with wood.

The Plan is to follow the construction of this kit from beginning to end.  Every step involved will be explained in detail and discussed as well as many pictures we will take to illustrate the progress.  These pictures will arrive each month with the building instructions and updates included with the Newsletter.

This project will provide us with a method to further explain many of the topics that have been discussed since the inception of these Newsletters.  As a preview, let me highlight some of the major building techniques that will be discussed.  First, the methods of working with wood, fiberglass and metal, along with the do’s and dont’s when working with each.  The proper steps to prepare each material for the finish paint job will be described in detail.

We will also look at reading and understanding the plans – instructions, as well as how to plan the layout of the Hull interior.  We can also take a look at the installation of the drive train and radio system, and probably need to construct a jig or two.  Basic electrical theory will be presented along with a number of soldering techniques and choices.

During the first stages of construction, a list of tools and additional materials needed,  will be released so that everyone will have the time needed to be prepared.  Throughout the entire project, the thoughts and considerations behind every decision will be shared with those following along.  This will be useful for anybody that might want to work on a similar project, or to refer back to in future projects.

Our end goal is to present everything involved in building a radio controlled scale model boat and break the building process down in to small, easily managed tasks.  It is my hope that this information, presented this way, will ease the fears that many new to the hobby experience, and offer some alternatives to those more experienced.

We hope that this project will be useful and interesting to all.  You can follow along by simply receiving our Newsletter each month, or you can build along.  Several models are similar enough that they would work well with this build.  For anyone interested in building along with the project, we are putting together a kit with everything you will need to complete the model, including hardware, battery, prop etc. for a special price.  We will also be able to provide running hardware to those using an alternative kit.

Anyone interested should E-Mail Us  or call us:  585-494-0027, so that we can have everything to you before we start.  The tentative starting date right now is the end of September.  And we should be within a week of that time without a problem.

If you have any questions in regards to this project, please contact us sooner rather than later so that we can start on schedule.  We will assist you any way we can.
