German heavy cruiser built in 1940, she sailed with the Bismarck in May 1941 in an attempt to break out into the Atlantic, but escaped Bismarck’s fate. Following refit at Brest, she returned to Germany in the “Channel Dash” of Feb. 1942.Turned over to the US, and served as a target of an A Bomb test and was sunk in Nov. 1947.
