BUCKETS Buckets in many sizes, shapes and styles were found aboard every type of ship. They were used as fire buckets, holy stoning buckets for scrubbing the decks, sand buckets for sanding the decks and for general fetch and carry work. OARS – WOOD These are old style oars with a large loom (section where seaman grabs the oar), are not appropriate for a 19th century boats or whaleboats. OAR LOCKS Though used on private and commercial small craft, oarlocks were not normally found on warship boats. The boats of sailing men-o-war had a vertical plank around the sides of the boat atop the gunwale. This had square slots, called rowlocks, into which the oars were fitted.
